Justin wanted to propose in Chicago. He lives all the way in Toronto with Basia. They were coming into town to visit since they love Chicago so much and this was the perfect opportunity to pop the question. We chatted via phone a few times to select the perfect location and time and we decided on North Avenue Beach with it’s epic view of the skyline. And it did not disappoint.
Justin popped the question mid day with full sun – which most photographers dread but I love – the challenge of shooting this time of day in this kind of light is always fun for me. It’s a technical challenge with a technical and creative solution. These kind of challenges – How do I create awesome photos in ‘bad’ circumstances? – is a big part of why I love photography. Problem solving on the fly.
Once the proposal was over we explored Lincoln Park a bit and ended up sharing beers at the Kerryman. It was really wonderful to get to know Justin and Basia because they are such great and warm people. I’m very glad they found each other and being able to witness the exact moment when their lives changed forever was really amazing for me. This is why I love wedding photography – such a big moment taking place and to be able to be there and capture it is huge. Believe it or not, I still get a rush when I see someone drop down on one knee..
